Suffering
by Paul Rambags

Scripture reading

Phili. 4:11-13: (11) Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: (12) I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. (13) I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Introduction

Because of all the suffering in this world, the wise King Solomon says that it's better to be dead than to be alive, and it would have been even better if you weren't born at all, because then you wouldn't have seen the evil works (Eccl.4:1-3).

There is a lot of suffering in this world, even among Christians. How can God, Who is love (1 John 4:8,16), let this happen?

Solomon says that the same event happens to all. Eccl.9:2-3: All things come alike to all: one event happens to the righteous and the wicked; to the good, the clean, and the unclean; to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice. As is the good, so is the sinner; he who takes an oath as he who fears an oath. This is an evil in all that is done under the sun: that one thing happens to all. Truly the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
If only the bad people would have to suffer, then much likely there wouldn't have been so much evil in the world. See also Job 21:7-13.

Cause

Inheritance from first sin.
Before first sin: Everything was very good (Gen.1:31), all living beings were vegetarians (Gen.1:30), there was lots of food (Gen.2:9,16), Adam and Eve lived together with God and there was no knowledge of evil (Gen.2:17).
After the fist sin, God's creation had changed dramatically: a woman's delivery is painful (Gen.3:16), we have to toil and sweat (Gen.3:17-19), the earth and life forms die because of God's curse (Gen.3:17), we're separated from God and we know of evil.

Old Testament quotes

Job 36:11: If they obey and serve Him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.
Psalm 34:10b: Those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.

Examples of sufferings

Jesus, Paul (Phili. 4:12, 2 Tim. 3:11), other apostles (Mat.10:17), Stephen (Acts 7), many prophets, Job, etc. etc.
Job: Don't argue with God, don't try to fight with Him and don't say "You're unfair", because God is much much much wiser and almightier than you.

God's will

I couldn't find that it's not God's will that we suffer.

However, 1 Tim. 2:4: God desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. See also 2 Peter 3:9.

Purposes
What should you do when you suffer?
Conclusion

Sometimes even Christians have to suffer, but not beyond what you can bear. Suffering keeps you humble, strengthens you, can help you to comfort others and can encourage others. When you suffer, don't argue with God, but thank, pray and glorify Him.
